For those of you who are interested in art, then you'll most likely enjoy Alex Ross art. For those of you who are interested in superheroes, then you'll most likely enjoy Alex Ross art.
Win/win situation? I think so.
The above picture is the artist's book, sold at most available book stores, of DC art. It also tells about the art process, his childhood, and his views on characters. Filled with nearly an inch thick of watercolors, this book made me jealous of Ross from the first page.
I don't want to sound like a kiss ass--but when I see his art, I think of "patience". He creates scenes, detailing each tiny building or each passerby, and shadows to the point of photographic accuracy. Alex Ross has been called the Norman Rockwell of comic book art,and I agree fully. I see his passion in the random practice sketches he draws. It's like, he could draw a foot with the pencil in his ear and it's the best thing ever. Totally exaggerated, but you get my point.
But also, the new medium he introduces--watercolor--is an awesome addition to comic book art. And the colors are so vibrant! I've noticed many artists are using different styles--Dave Mckean and Tim Sale come to mind--instead of the usual ink and computer aid. It just shows that this little world of ours isn't limited anymore.
I find it sort of odd that he chose comic books to base his art upon, though. In Mythology, you find out that he'd always wanted to do this. Alot of determination, I think. When I first started drawing, it was mostly comprised of badly drawn faeries and mermaids. Their freaking chins sat on their necks and I thought that they should all be skinny enough to fit inside a pen barrel. Just goes to show that art evolves!
But in all, I think that if enough people saw his work, this medium would be taken a little more seriously. Whenever my more left brained friends pick up the graphic novels they read, it's like Michelangelo's work is sitting right in front of them and all they see are Batman's abs. Again, total exaggeration, but have you ever felt that way? Oh, and by the way, the book itself sucked--binding fell apart in two days! Worth the cheapness, though!
